The first thing I’m going to do is put some !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in a Miata. Seems to be a pretty popular choice. Hoping it will fix my P0012 code [P0012 - “A” Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Retarded]. I probably brought on the code myself with my poor driving skills. I’ve never done my own oil before.

Diesel oil in a Miata? Am I missing something?

Dead short between the steering wheel and the seat.

just the usual “its probably your brand of oil” type forum debate.

Well, I’d like to hear the opinion of people around here on the subject.

I read about a guy who more or less brings cars back from the dead (buys them cheaply, sells them fixed, later, at a profit). First thing he does with petrol engines is to run them with suitable-weight diesel oil for a couple of oil changes. He explains that diesel-spec oil is more detergent and helps to clean the internals of engines that have received minimal or no maintenance – or have been driven in such a way (never reaching proper temperature for long enough) that they are quite full of sludge/carbon deposits.

Sounds good, but maybe too good to be true. Any ideas?

brah, if you use mobil 1 your blow up your engine, you have to use amsoil or nothing.

I dunno, I’ve never really heard of running diesel oil in a non-diesel motor.

I run Eneos 5W30 full synthetic in my 2002 Miata with 90k miles.

Castrol GTX High Mileage in my 1988 Mazda 323 GTX with 190k miles.

funny story, we had 2 valve guide failures related to amsoil...my dad was a distributor until that

About 3 years ago Royal People rebranded their 15/40 oil to call it Duralec, a diesel brand they purchased.

Lots of cars use 5/30, and a lot of German cars use crazily heavy 10/60. But for some reason a 40 weight oil is considered a diesel weight.

But for old cars that used to take a 30 weight, the slightly thicker 40 weight can use/leak less and help provide the right film on old (worn) bearing surfaces.

And yes, depending on the OWN the different diesel oils can have different additives.

This is what I’m leaning on. A bunch of Miata.net posts and WRX owners invading the Amazon page confirms the safety aspect!

Apparently it’s “SM” rated, so it’s gasoline-safe :)

If you search “Rotella T6 miata” into google, there are many discussions over it. Majority of them positive.

Related to Amsoil how? I mean, you just can’t talk religion with some people.

We had both engines torn down and the results indicated not proved that lubrication issues were the fault. That being said, its hardly a smoking gun.

I only ask because a guy I’ve known 20 years is an absolute zealot about Amsoil. I have an Goodwrench remanufactured 4.3L Vortec in my Safari van that I’ve used Amsoil in from practically Day 1. (The Engine Rebuilders Association recommends using mineral for the first 2500 miles...) Beyond that, I am of the opinion that motor oil is a LOT better than it was when Amsoil was conceived and unless your engine has less than 50k miles on it, there’s not a strong case for using it. As well, one of Amsoil’s footholds back in the day was multi-level marketing, and I think social networking and the likes of Amazon have pretty much dismembered MLM.

WE used to be super pro amsoil, but we had 2 valve guide failures after switching and...come to think of it, some severe blowby related issues on a supercharged engine using it as well. It just didn’t seem to work for us, or it was a massive coincidence.

What did you switch to? I had a situation with my 3.4L Impala where I installed synthetic oil — I think it was Valvoline — and I had a lifter that wouldn’t stay actuated. Went back to mineral and it’s fine. ~80k miles on the engine. My Amsoil friend would blame the engine. I say, synthetic isn’t always the best answer. And as I said, the mineral oils are much better these days. What are they up to API-SJ?

I think we did Mobil 1 for a while but yeah, unless the engine has insane tolerances or heat requirements I don’t see the gain for synth. Im running cheapo mile 5000 in the cruiser because it likes it better. Folks do blackstone test on these trucks all the time and they are fine to 5000 mile intervals even with the mineral stuff, and you get fewer issues like piston slap.

Another interesting Amsoil Story: I am a big fan of synthetic lube for automotive manual transmissions and transaxles. I filled with Amsoil gear lube — I don’t remember the application — and I got gear clash because the lube was too slippery and the synchros wouldn’t work properly. Turns out the transmission specified GL4. I switched to Redline MTL and it works great. I swear by the stuff now.

In the 50s, Amsoil was a revolution. Nowadays, it’s not very remarkable, IMHO.

I think if you change it diligently at 5,000-mile intervals, it matters little what you use, so long as the viscosity is appropriate.

now here i agree (again) that gear oil merits synth, that being said I use the cheap stuff again in the cruiser because i change it so often (knuckle grease intrusion is a thing that happens, even with new seals and no clogged breathers)

I’ll admit, I’m mildly nervous about it, especially since I’ve never done my own oil before. Fingers crossed!
